New York Intense – Fragrance Du Bois

Crafted in France, Fragrance Du Bois is a range of niche luxury fragrances that specialise in the use of Oud. This exquisite natural ingredient is renowned for being an opulent addition to any fragrance, enhancing its longevity and adding a depth and complexity that is second to none. Fragrance Du Bois’s ethos is that it only uses the finest raw materials that are sustainably sourced, protecting our planet and giving back to rural communities. Each fragrance is created by an array of esteemed perfumers from around the world, adding their own unique stories, memories and creativity whilst maintaining that Fragrance Du Bois essence. After sniffing my way through their Fashion Capitals Collection Sample set, I immediately gravitated towards New York Intense. As the name suggests, this collection is inspired by iconic cities from around the world which are particularly known for their fashion, shopping and culture.

As always with this brand, the first thing I have to comment on is their extremely eye-catching presentation which only accentuates the fact that you have purchased a truly exquisite product. As you remove its outer protective packaging, it unsheathes itself to reveal a luxuriously soft to the touch black box embossed with a gold metal logo. The whole package feels as if you’re unveiling a deluxe piece of fine jewellery. On opening, the fragrance vessel is nestled in a bed of opulent red material, which once finished can be removed so that the box can be used for many years to come. The sturdy bottle also impresses with its solid and distinguished design, crowned with a gold top and encircled with a black jewel design. A certificate detailing the origins of the Oud, and an Oud chip from the plantation it was taken from, is also enclosed. This unique addition certainly adds to the whole experience and is something that I have never seen before from other fragrance houses.

New York Intense by distinguished perfumer Pierre-Constantin Gueros (previous work includes Caroline Herrera, Davidoff, Givenchy) is a stunning Amber spicy fragrance. Just like the New York Streets themselves, the fragrance starts with an energetic flurry of citrus nuances. This vibrant beginning emulates the intensity of the city, its lively vibes setting you up for a busy day ahead. As the citrus notes dissipate, the spicy herbal tones of Cinnamon, Coriander and Bay leaf come together to create a somewhat Autumnal combination. Although the fragrance was composed to recreate summer in the city, I seem to pick up a completely different vibe. But that’s what I love about the olfactory world is that each scent takes individuals on their very own sensory journey. For me, it conjures up images of wandering from the busy avenues and enjoying a gentle fall stroll through Central Park, the crisp golden leaves crinkling beneath my feet. Although it does give off a sense of warmth, I find it to be more of a comforting feeling as if wandering in from a cold NYC sidewalk to enjoy a warming drink. Before the fragrance takes on a full spicy aura the cool floral tones of rose and the delicate sweetness of baked blackberry seeps through, balancing the scent beautifully.

The sweetness continues in the heart of the fragrance with a hint of glistening honey paired fantastically with Immortelle and the creamy undertones of Vanilla. As you can imagine this could almost teeter on the edge of gourmand but the interjection of the most impressive balsamic woody notes steers this in the opposite direction. Olibanum and Guaiac Wood and clove come together to create a remarkable amalgamation of green, woody and spicy nuances. Again a warm, soothing and comforting vibe exudes from the skin whilst underneath a demure fluttering of orchid makes an appearance.

The base of New York Intense has the most addictive and alluring attributes and I truly enjoyed this part of the olfactory journey. As with all Fragrance Du Bois fragrances, you can expect the inclusion of the finest Oud and in this scent, there is no exception. Although it plays a less dominant role here you can still trace its complex characteristics, helping to add an opulent depth and complexity. The woody presence that has weaved its way through the progression of this scent reveals itself most astonishingly. The dry, earthy and smoky union of Vetiver, Oakmoss and Cedarwood wafts from the skin, trailing in the air and turning heads as you walk by. These accords combined with the addition of Musk, Amber, Labdanum and Myrhh come together to create the most impressive finish. Even after a small spray on my jacket or scarf, it continues to permeate the air around me from morning to night. After numerous compliments and impressive longevity, it is certainly my go-to fragrance at the moment.

  2. This fragrance looks amazing and the scent sounds beautiful and love that you can pick up elements from something from summer but still get autumn vibes. A bit like wearing a cardigan over a summer dress perhaps. Love it!
