Nourished

Nourished

There has never been a more important time to look after yourself, keeping your body and mind healthy. I don’t know about you but the first few weeks of isolation, being home alone, consisted of a copious amount of unhealthy snacks and a few extra units of alcohol. Of course this was stress-induced and I quickly realised that this was not sustainable in the long run. Pre-Corona, I had been successfully working out at the gym however wasn’t looking after my overall nutrition and I felt like my present nutritional supplements weren’t helping. I usually avoid multi-vitamins because they simply provide more than my body requires, so I would buy individual vitamins according to what I felt my body lacked. This, of course, was expensive and I would often forget to take them.

Luckily I came across Nourished; an ingenious UK based company who launched late last year. Nourished uses revolutionary new 3D printing methods and patented vegan encapsulation formulae to combine seven ingredients into a personalised chewable vitamin stack tailored specifically to your individual nutritional needs. The idea was created and designed by serial entrepreneur Melissa Snover, who piloted the concept on the renowned TV show Dragons Den. It was then Nourished was born and the worlds first truly customisable and personalised 3D printed nutritional product was launched.

Founder Mellisa Snover

After completing a simple consultation questionnaire online, Nourished did all the hard work and created a perfect combination of vitamin and supplements tailored to my needs. This combination was then 3D printed into my very own vegan and sugar-free vitamin stack. A month’s supply was shipped directly to my door in plastic-free, home compostable packaging. These can be bought as a one-off purchase or in a subscription format.

Additionally, if you wish to choose your own vitamins and supplements then you can request these online. You can also choose specific Nourished life stacks carefully formulated to promote key benefits, these stacks include:

  • Inner Defence (to support the immune system)
  • Inner Vitality (+ 55) (to support those over the age of 55)
  • Inner Peace (to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve sleep)
  • Plant-based Power (plant-based nutrition stack)
  • High Flyer (to support those who have a hectic lifestyle)
  • Prenatal (a blend for expectant and pregnant woman)
  • Inner Beauty (for nails, hair and ageing)
  • Party Proofed (for those who like to burn the candles at both ends)
  • Packed & Stacked (to enhance performance, boost energy and aid muscle recovery)
  • Menopure (to help support those going through menopause)

Blu Blazer Guy thoughts:

For the past few months I have been trying my own personalised blend and have been really impressed with the overall experience. The online consultation was relatively quick and easy, and within only a few days I had my own personalised box of vitamins. Because of my previous experience with other chewable vitamins, I thought these vitamin stacks were going to taste terrible, but in fact they are delicious and sweet which genuinely makes taking them so much more satisfying.

I have also been trying the Nourished Inner / Outer Defence Life Stack which is particularly apt due to the current pandemic that we are going through. This immune-boosting stack includes 7 cleverly combined ingredients to support normal immune function, support gut health and digestion, reduce inflammation and protect against free radicals and foreign toxins. Included in the pack is the ‘outer defence’ hand sanitiser which we currently is in such demand just now. These two go hand in hand to protect from the inside and out.

These stacks, along with regular exercise are giving me extra confidence knowing that I am supporting my body to best of my ability, both physically and nutritionally. Nourished are not only innovative but also contain well researched ingredients that are of high quality and optimum absorption, which gives me the assurance that I am supplying my body with the best supplements that it needs.

I can’t say that my recent boost in energy and mood are directly connected to these vitamin stacks but I do believe that they are definitely contributing to my overall health and wellbeing and that can only be good right?

Float Philosophy

Float Philosophy

This time of the year is all about recalibrating the body and mind and I am always on the lookout for new ways of doing this. I recently came across Float Philosophy, a fantastic place that provides floatation therapy. I had heard about floatation therapy from a few friends and had been wanting to try it out for a while. I must admit I was a tad nervous as I really didn’t know what to expect, however as I arrived at the stunning countryside setting those anxious feelings had begun to dissipate.

The owner Nick has beautifully converted a previous farm barn on the outskirts of Edinburgh into a tranquil space. The relaxation room is where visitors can relax and unwind before and after their treatment. It is a calming blend white walls, artwork displaying positive quotes and comfortable contemporary furniture which is set off by a beautiful large window that frames the surrounding countryside views.

For those of you that don’t already know, floatation therapy involves lying in a bath of water combined with large amounts of Epsom salts (which allows the body to float) in a specially constructed pod. The pod is then closed and you are completely shut off from the outside world allowing you to truly disconnect and enter a zone of peace and tranquillity. Many countries around the world already use this therapy and in some places its prescribed by their doctor for a number of ailments. Due to stressful lives, sensory overload and the inability to switch off, there have been many studies into the psychological benefits of this therapy including:

·         Deep relaxation and Stress Relief

·         Promotes Wellbeing

·         Disconnection

·         Improves Sleep

As well as benefits to mental health it can also help with a number of physical conditions including;

·         Chronic Pain Management (such as muscle tension, Fibromyalgia and Arthritis)

·         Sports Recovery

Each pod is located in its very own room with a shower, including toiletries and towels, so you really don’t need to worry about bringing anything but yourself. When I first thought of lying in a pod in complete darkness, the fear of feeling claustrophobic did cross my mind but as soon as I saw the pod, I was pleasantly surprised. The state of the art pods are very spacious as they were originally built for athletes, so much so that they are in fact the size of a small car.

Before entering the pod you are asked to take a shower, ensuring you are clean and free of any skin products. As you are showering the pod automatically fills with the water and Epsom salt solution, then the soothing lights and music starts to play. After inserting earplugs (which are also provided) it was time to lay back, close the pod and experience floatation therapy.

As soon as my body entered the water and started to float I honestly felt an immediate relief from all my body pain (due to recently starting the gym and sitting at a desk all day) so much so that I let out a huge sigh! The water itself is continuously heated to body temperature so you tend to forget that it’s there and it feels almost if you are laying on a cloud. For ten minutes the soft light and music played and then slowly phased out leaving complete darkness. It is here where the true test lies as every one of your senses is cut off (sensory deprivation) and you are left with your own thoughts. At first, I became a tad restless and started to think about normal everyday thoughts but after around ten minutes I began to drift off into a state that is quite difficult to describe. My body became so relaxed that it would drift around in circles (that’s how big the pod is) and my mind became very silent and still.

My worry prior to the therapy was that I would fall asleep and drown or have some sort of accident. However this is literally impossible because soon as your body begins to turn on its side, it automatically goes on its back again. The whole session lasts around an hour and I was completely surprised when the lights and music gently came back on, it honestly felt like I was in there for no more than twenty minutes. As soon as I got out and had a shower I felt so relaxed as if coming out of massage treatment or a really nice nap.

After getting changed there is also a separate vanity room where hairdryers and mirrors are provided, yet again taking the worry out of having to bring lots of things with you. You then have the opportunity to sit in the relaxation room and enjoy a warming cup of herbal tea and read one of the many books on offer. What I especially loved was that you don’t feel rushed and the whole experience is truly geared towards making you feel as comfortable and chilled out as possible. I had dabbled before in meditation and mindfulness but was never able to fully focus. This however allowed me to truly switch off and not reach for my phone (well except once for blog reasons 😉 After a hectic year and busy festive period, I was looking for something help me to completely disconnect and this was the perfect solution. I can only imagine that continued use of floatation therapy would definitely benefit individuals who suffer from the ailments above and each time falling into that zen state would get easier. Float Philosophy is definitely a place I would return to.  When I left I felt as if I was on cloud nine and that night I had the best sleep ever.

The Balmoral hotel – Spa Facilities

The Balmoral hotel – Spa Facilities

The Balmoral is one of my favourite hotels in Scotland and I have previously spoken about it in my article for Guild Magazine. It may be known for its elegant rooms, commanding architecture and its prominent mark on the Edinburgh skyline. However what people may not know is that beneath its floors lies a treasure trove of wellness and recuperation. Descend the hotel’s golden elevator and the doors open to reveal a tranquil retreat that both residents and non-residents can enjoy. The small reception opens up into a spacious spa with a swimming pool, gym, treatment rooms, steam room and sauna.

Swimming pool, Steam room and Sauna.

The recently revamped state of the art steam room and sauna located at the far end of the swimming pool is the perfect place to unwind. Situated adjacent to each other and separated by a shower area, the steam room and sauna have been an utter godsend for yours truly. Not only do they help ease my muscles, but they are great for circulation which is fantastic at this time of the year.

Relaxing in the sauna

The new décor of navy blue and gold accessories have added a more contemporary flair to the area.

The new look sauna and steam room area

The 15-metre swimming pool is perfect for relaxing in or swimming laps. What I love about this swimming pool is that it is always at the perfect temperature.

The surrounding lounge beds provide such  comfort, enabling you can lay back and relax or read your favourite book or magazine.

I especially enjoy the tranquil seating area where you can enjoy numerous complimentary hot drinks, Scottish mineral water infused with seasonal fruit and an array of smoothies, drinks and food that can be purchased via the reception.

Treatment Rooms

Within the wellness area are numerous treatment rooms offering an array of treatments catered to your every need. Even though these rooms seem to be in close proximity of the central area, each room is a tucked away so that you can enjoy your treatment without hearing the outside world.

With soft music in the background, glimmering candles and an array of scents that linger in the air, these rooms provide a tranquil safe haven that are the perfect place to de-stress and unwind. There are two main skincare brands used within the spa. Firstly, Irene Forte skincare which is a range of luxury natural products handmade in Italy and created by Wellness Director at Rocco Forte Hotels, Irene Forte. As well as renowned brand Ishga who use seaweed sourced from the Hebridean Islands of Scotland.

Treatment room

I chose a a bespoke facial using the Irene Forte range. The Irene Forte Facial is a personalised facial tailored to suit your skin’s needs. There are three to choose from: Forte Purifier, Forte Brightener and Forte Hydrator. If your skin requires a combination then these treatments can be adapted.

After completing a consultation and discussing it with my therapist we decided to go for the Forte Hydrator, because my skin felt a tad lack-lustre and a little dry. My therapist gave me chose of two oils to smell. I had to choose which I preferred to be used in my treatment, I of course chose orange blossom.   With the candles lit and my body settled into the comfortable bed I already felt my tensions ease away. Due to the fact that the Irene Forte skincare is inspired by Sicily a small Sicilian bell is rung before the facial, which is said to calm and relax the mind, it certainly made me feel extremely relaxed.

Cleanse: Firstly my face was cleansed with Irene Forte Almond Cleansing Milk. This hydrating cleanser contains Almond, Olive, Rose and Jojoba Oil along with soothing Aloe Vera juice. It was great to take in the beautiful aroma as this was massaged onto my face and the nourishing texture really sunk into the skin.

Tone:  The Irene Forte Helichrysum Hyaluronic Toner was then used. This toner prepares the skin for the remaining products and includes Hyaluronic Acid which is an ingredient known for its hydrating skincare properties

Exfoliate: Irene Forte Almond Face Scrub was gently massaged onto my skin. Unlike some other exfoliators that can feel too harsh on the skin, this felt nourishing and very moisturising. The Almond Face Scrub is filled with Almond and Hazelnut granules, Aloe leaf juice, Hyaluronic acid as well as Olive, Avocado and Shea oil. This was then followed by my previously chosen Orange Blossom Face oil which is used to brighten and tone the skin.

Mask and Massage: The Irene Forte Pistachio Face Mask was layered on the skin and felt immediately comforting. This age-defying mask is full of Antioxidant-rich ingredients and replenishing oils and again has a fragrance to die for. This was accompanied by a relaxing shoulder massage using the Orange Blossom Body Oil.

Moisturise: A trio of different product was used as the final part of the treatment. The Hibiscus Serum was applied first which lifts, hydrated and minimises fine lines and wrinkles. This was followed by the Prickly Pear Face Cream full of rich nutrients and anti-oxidants and finishing with Almond eye & lip cream.

I found this facial extremely relaxing and it was a great introduction to the Irene Forte skincare brand. I especially loved choosing my desired oil at the start, which added a sensory interactive experience to the treatment. The additional shoulder massage was a great way to include a relaxing aspect to the facial and left me feeling very de-stressed. My skin felt extremely supple and glowing afterwards and it’s definitely one I would do again, especially in the winter months when my skin suffers the most.

After a long period of not visiting the gym, I thought I would also sign up to there in house personal training, Will Power Personal Training. Keep your eye on my next blog post to find out how I have been getting on.

MEDAHUMAN – CBD DRINKS

MEDAHUMAN – CBD DRINKS

Over the past few years I have been exploring the health benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is a compound found in the Cannabis plant, however it does not contain the psychoactive chemical (THC) that gives you a ‘high’.  Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the market and different products can be found everywhere you turn. Most of the CBD products that I have tried had been within a carrier oil which was applied under the tongue. Unfortunately I found the taste and texture a tad unpleasant.

I recently discovered MEDAHUMAN who have released a range of CBD drinks. From the moment I viewed their products online I was drawn in by their contemporary branding; which unlike other CBD products didn’t contain the stereotypical cannabis leaf symbol which can sometimes be off putting. Their marketing and website was full of facts and information backed by scientific research which was impressive for an extreme fact checker like me. MEDA uses Liposomal CBD which is described as “minute, stable particles, encased in liposomes”, this allows the CBD to pass straight into the cells, thus working faster than normal CBD. In addition, the CBD is derived from plants that are organic, pesticide free and non-GMO.

MEDAHUMAN were kind enough to send me a few cans and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The drinks are divided up into different health-boosting categories: CALM to de-stress, GLOW to nourish skin, RECOVER to reduce inflammation, DEFENCE to help balance your immunise system and the self explanatory SLEEP and FOCUS. Therefore not only do you get 15mg of Liposomal CBD you also get the added health benefits of other natural ingredients that you may require. What surprised me the most was the beautiful flavour combinations of each drink, where none disappointed. That being said, my favourite flavour has to be CALM, with delicate tones of Lavender and Chamomile. It really does help me to wind down and relax especially on days where I am feeling overwhelmed.

I spoke with creator Adam Feldheim to find out more information on the brand and the products;

Adam, you created MEDAHUMAN, what inspired you to produce these impressive CBD drinks?

I am from LA, ground zero for CBD and wellness, I started taking CBD a couple years ago for anxiety and stress management and I recognised the opportunity to develop an interesting consumer business in Europe. I wanted to be a first mover, which I am.

There are many CBD products on the market, how do MEDAHUMAN CBD drinks differ from them?

MEDA is a nutraceutical health focused drink, ie CBD + adaptogens and nootropics that have a synergistic functional benefit. Most of the other products in the market are carbonated and sugary. We are also different from a brand positioning standpoint, as we are looking to de-stigmatise CBD, as is evident the branding is modern and clean with no association with marijuana imagery, which a lot of my competitors are more focused on.

CBD has many known benefits, especially for anxiety but who else can benefit from these CBD products?

There are wide ranging benefits of CBD, as described on our website. CBD helps with focus, immunity, inflammation, sleep, skin, sexual health, etc.

I especially like how each of the CBD drinks have been cleverly separated into different health-boosting categories, was it a difficult task to create these diverse combinations and flavours?

I worked with nutritionists to carefully select the ingredients in all of the drinks. It was important to me that we were credible from a health standpoint, as so I avoided using things like agave as a sweetener substitute to be true to these health claims. I will continue to develop and refine recipes to offer the best experience to my consumers.

Are the beneficial effects felt immediately after the drink is consumed or do they need to be consumed over a period of time?

In general CBD should be consumed slowly and regularly. Part of the reason I went with the smaller 150ml can was to encourage daily intake (ie, taking your medicine). Everyone reacts differently to CBD, but on average you can feel the benefits within 5 minutes of taking it.

Are there any plans to increase the range in future?

Yes, I am already developing a range of MEDA Mixers that will provide a low calorie/sugar alternative to many popular cocktail recipes, adding CBD and the other nutritional ingredients.

Thank you Adam, we look forward to seeing many more MEDA products.
