For me, fragrance has become an important vessel in transporting me from the walls of my home to my favourite memories of far off places. No better fragrance connoisseur manages to combine the world of perfume and travel than Jo Malone CBE. Her fantastic brand Jo Loves, is an innovative new scent, bath, body and candle collection that is inspired by special memories and moments of travel.
Walking along Mount Street in London, Jo Malone was captivated by the vibrant blue sky above her, the sun ricocheting off the buildings and the fresh cologne of a passer-by. It immediately ignited her creativity and she longed to capture this day in the form of a fragrance. All the way through lockdown Jo perfected this fragrance and it wasn’t long before Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar was born. Inspired by blue skies and the limitless opportunities it represents, Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar exudes celebration, enthusiasm, and a newfound intensity for enjoying life. Only Jo Malone could think of a post-lockdown scent that would transport us from a very long and difficult year, to remind us of the freedom and beauty of the life that we took for granted. It was a fragrance that I very much needed, therefore when it landed on my doorstep, I was extremely excited to try it. Although the fragrance is available in either 50ml or 100ml, you can purchase a limited edition 100ml bottle decorated by artist, Natasha Murray. This stunning hand-blown bottle is embellished with different hues of blue, emulating a sparkling blue sky, which goes perfectly with my blue blazer.
From the moment you spray this fragrance on to the skin, the powerful top notes are truly impressive. The perfume starts with an injection of energetic grapefruit, a staple ingredient of Jo’s that she also included in her signature fragrance, Jo by Jo Loves. This sharp and bitter opening brings an immediate brightness that sparkles on the nose, instantly providing an uplifting and refreshing vibe.
As the initial citrus aroma dissipates, I begin to sense that distinctive Mediterranean cologne vibe. The vetiver begins to truly shine by adding a slice of masculinity with its dry, earthy and woody subtleties. That warmness of the vetiver is balanced with the cool floral notes of geranium, peppering the air with its crisp citrusy nuances.
The fragrance continues to develop into a delicate, smooth and aromatic combination. I get very subtle hints of smokey undertones which provide depth, but it never loses that impressive clean airiness. The subtle inclusion of Cedar laces the skin with its pleasant, gentle and slightly balsamic aroma. This pine-like citrusy note prolongs that beautiful and addictive freshness to the very end.
Jo has done an excellent job in encapsulating those freeing emotions that we will hopefully all be able to experience soon. Its light, clean and elegant composition is perfect for entering into the summer season. Even if we aren’t able to jet off to our favourite sunny destination, a spray of Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar will at least mentally transport us there.
